The Watch Hill 15 Fleet closed the Spring Series on Saturday, drawing nine boats for our last race of June. We sailed into the kitchen to meet Race Committee under overcast skies and an unusual wind direction, many of us testing our spinnakers on the way out. Race Committee set two competitive races and predicted an early afternoon change in conditions that would even out the course. Still, fleet racers in both races contended with strange, shifty winds near the leeward mark as we fought for inside overlap.
At the end of the first race, Tight Squeeze (#24) sailed past Minx (#23) for third and Bahama Gal (#10) placed a close second. Goose (#22), with its crew of two, outsailed the shifts for a clean first place.
The second race brought with it a light rain shower but, luckily, not a large increase in wind speed. Tight Squeeze, demonstrating real consistency in inconsistent conditions, placed third. Correctly reading how that early afternoon change would affect the course, Hi Toots! (#15) sailed into second. Bahama Gal ultimately held off the rest of the fleet for an impressive first place.
